Even though I haven't seen all his films, he’s one of my top five favorite directors, and "The Assassination of Ryoma" is a movie I've watched many times; his other works, like "Preparation for the Festival" and "Beautiful Summer in Kirishima," filled every scene with meaning and tension—it's a real loss; rest in peace.

It's hard to put into words exactly what made his films great, but even in the most casual scenes, there was always a strong underlying theme, and every frame carried a sense of tension.
